When Should You Replace A Water Heater?

1) Rusty Colored Water

One sign that you should replace a water heater is when you notice rusty colored water.

As a tank deteriorates and rusts, the rust gets into your hot water, causing it to have an unsightly brownish color. (If you turn on your cold water, and it is rusty too, your water heater is not the issue.)

2) Your Water Heater Is Too Old

Another sign you should replace your water heater is how old it is.

Nothing lasts forever, least of all a water heater. During the average home occupancy, you can expect to face that moment where you need to replace your water heater. Whether or not a heater begins showing warning signs, you should replace it once 10 years has passed from its manufacture date.

3) Water Heater Noise

This sign could simply mean a repair is needed. But if its coupled with the other signs above, it could mean you should replace the water heater.

Due to sediment formations on the bottom of the tank, water heaters are predisposed to making noise during operation. The sediment will begin to deteriorate the components of the water heater and can affect its functionality. This buildup will also eventually lead to leaks. Flushing your heater consistently can help keep the sediment to a minimum, but eventually your appliance will need to be replaced.
