5 Reasons Your Central AC Blows Warm Air
With the weather heating up and summer and spring coming around, the last thing you need to worry about is hot air coming from your home’s AC unit.
With that being said, don’t worry just yet, we’re here to help. Today we will be telling you about 5 things that could be causing your AC to blow out warm air instead of cooling you and your family.
We will also be sharing some tips, tricks, and recommendations on how to deal with a cooling system, that just isn’t cooling anymore.
There are many different reasons and variables that can cause warm air to blow out of your air conditioner. If you are experiencing warm air from your home’s cooling system we would like to share 5 common causes, that will hopefully help narrow your focus, and also point you in a cool direction.
Let’s begin with the easiest items to troubleshoot why your AC is blowing warm air.
Thermostat Setting
One of our first recommendations is that you check your thermostat. Be certain that your system is set to these 3 things, the first being, that your system is set to “COOL,” the second being, that your fan is set to “AUTO”, and the last being, that your temperature setting is a fair amount under what the room temperature reads on your thermostat (it should be at the minimum, 5 degrees).
Dirty Condenser Unit
One thing many people don’t consider is taking a look at your outside unit—which is more commonly known as or referred to as a “condenser unit”.
You should try and be certain that there nothing is interfering with your system’s moving parts, visibly. You should also attempt to search for any dirt, leaves, tall grass or debris that could be blocking something.
If you do see or are experiencing a blockage, we recommend that you attempt to carefully remove it (and also realize the importance of air conditioning maintenance).
Dirty Air Filter
When was the last time you changed your air filter? This is a question that most people probably don’t know. Well, we’re here to tell you, it isn’t a myth; a properly cleaned air filter is very important.
You may be asking yourself, why? Well, the filter protects your cooling systems’ inner mechanisms from dust, dirt, and debris, and it also promotes air to properly flow. If you live in an area where there is a warmer climate, we recommend that you check your air filter at least once a month.
Low Refrigerant Leak
One of the most common reasons your system is not properly releasing cool air is because it is low on refrigerant.
Unfortunately, if this is the issue, you will need a professional to properly assess if this is the issue. Remember, the refrigerant isn’t like gas. This means, if this is the issue, you are actually experiencing a leak, and you will also require a professional to find and fix the leak before adding more refrigerant.
Leaky Air Ducts
If this isn’t the issue, you could also have a leak in an air duct, which could be affecting your system’s cooling process. If your ducts are not visible or are hidden either in your walls, attic, or basement, you will also require the assistance of an HVAC professional.
Your air conditioner’s job is to keep you cool and comfortable, but you can also contribute! If your room temperature is already extremely hot before you turn on the system, it has to work exceptionally hard to cool the temperature down and restore your comfort.
However, one tip we also have for you is that, if you keep blinds and shades closed during the day, your room temperature will cool down naturally, and give your system a break to prevent your AC from blowing warm air in the first place. Preventing your system from overworking itself will not only extend the life of your A/C but also lower your costs. You can also help your cooling system by improving insulation, sealing any leaks, and using ceiling fans or floor fans.
